Crest, Mascot, Colours, and Motto

Although there have been several variations over the years, the school crest has always featured the mythic griffin, drawn in green or yellow-gold. The school colours are now officially green and white.

W. J. Baird teams are known as "Griffins". A griffin is a legendary creature that had the head and wings of an eagle and the body and legs of a lion. Griffins often adorn the coats of arms of families, cities, states and nations. The example on the right is from Baden, Germany. Griffins were imagined to be fast flyers, possessing excellent vision, with the strength and courage of a lion.

The motto of the school is "Striving for Excellence"
