W. J. Baird Public School is the home of the Griffins. Our school is situated in the heart of the town of Blenheim, Ontario. We are ideally situated across the street from major recreational facilities such as an indoor pool, arena and park. The pool and arena are regularly accessed by all classes for physical education throughout the year. We presently have 240 students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8. In January of 2007, our school was very fortunate in that we were able to open a Best Start Hub providing the residents of Blenheim with a day-care facility for infants to age 5 with students in Junior and Senior Kindergarten able to access a wrap-a-round program in which they attend kindergarten at Baird and daycare at the Hub on alternate days. These students, therefore, have access to a full-time program further promoting the development of both social and academic skills. The Blenheim Ministerial Association sponsors a daily breakfast program attended by approximately 135 students on a weekly basis. Parent, grandparent and community volunteers cook breakfast for our young students Monday through Friday starting at 8:30 in the morning. The School Council and Home and School Association actively support the school through fundraising and meet on the third Wednesday of each month to discuss various school issues. They have financed the maintenance of this web-site as a way to communicate with fellow parents and they provide much support and guidance to the principal. Our school has a computer lab and several SMART boards to allow for flexible teaching and the use and appreciation of technology on a regular basis. Our students attend a Computer Club regularly throughout the year. We also support learning through a Homework Club for Junior students and have participated in the Co-Curricular Learning Club for students in Grades seven and eight. |
Students at Baird are enthusiastic about our active intramural program in which they are divided into four colour houses throughout their school career starting in grade 3. Our Green Gators, Yellow Jackets, Blue Bombers and Red Raiders are always enthusiastic about each sport in which they participate. This lunch-time program allows our students to maintain their physical fitness standards as well as develop their skills in each of the sports. Our teaching staff supports the extra-curricular sports program allowing our school to compete against other schools in cross country, soccer, volleyball, basketball and track and field. Our students are all fine sports and represent Baird well and with great pride. Our school playground boasts a large green area with two sets of playground equipment - one in the primary area and the other in the junior area. There are tetherballs, basketball nets, and soccer and baseball fields as well. Through parental support and a dedicated staff our students continue to work to meet our school motto, "Striving for Excellence". |
